The Kappa League of the Montclair (NJ) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity is an award-winning leadership development program that provides mentorship to local middle school and high school boys in New Jersey. Each year, our unique program pairs members of our fraternity with local youngsters through an eight month one-on-one mentoring partnership.

The Montclair (NJ) Alumni Chapter has won the Northeastern Province’s “Best Guide Right” Award (Best Kappa League) in the small chapter category for 7 consecutive years (2011 - 2018).

The Montclair Kappa League is an initiative of  The Kappa Guide Right and Scholarship Fund of Montclair, NJ; a certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide “grants and scholarships to black youths residing in and out of Essex, Morris and Passaic Counties who have achieved academically or who have demonstrated scholastic potential and have financial need.” Each year, the Montclair Nupes host their annual Frank L. Monroe Scholarship Dance (also known as the “Kappa Gala”)—a fundraiser event that raises tens of thousands of dollars in college tuition assistance local graduating high school seniors.

HISTORY OF KAPPA LEAGUE

The Kappa League was founded Thursday, February 12, 1970 by the Los Angeles (CA) Alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi; under the direction of Mel Davis. Davis brought the idea to LA from Dayton, OH where he had worked closely with Jay Crosby to expand the guide right activities of Dayton (OH) Alumni chapter. The Kappa League is a series of activities designed to help young high school male students develop their leadership talents. The activities provide both challenging and rewarding experiences to enhance their lives. The goal of the League is to help the students achieve worthy goals for themselves and to make meaningful contributions to their communities. The League includes a series of workshops to achieve its goals.

MONTCLAIR KAPPA LEAGUE OBJECTIVES

  1. To encourage, support and develop young men to refine self-image, self-esteem, and social skills.
